A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
