Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
